The MyScholarships portal is home to over $1 million in scholarship funds available to current students at Georgia Southern University based on major, campus involvement, academic merit, and more. Students can access the MyScholarships portal from their MyGeorgiaSouthern homepage and log in using Georgia Southern credentials. A few helpful tips for applying for scholarships are a currently enrolled student:

• Scholarship applications are open from October – February 1 each year, with a few exceptions based on specific scholarships. 
• Scholarships are awarded April – June for the following academic year.
• We encourage all current students to complete and submit the general application and the current student application. Based on the responses from these applications, you will be automatically matched to opportunities you are eligible for. 
• Some scholarship opportunities require additional questions, and the MyScholarships portal will recommend those opportunities to you upon completion of the current student application.
• The post-acceptance questions must be completed in order to receive scholarship funds.

Betty Lane Family and Consumer Science Scholarship

In 1949, Betty Lane graduated from Georgia College and State University. Lane then obtained two more degrees from the University of Georgia and Florida State University, finally earning her doctorate. Lane joined the Georgia Southern family in 1958 as an assistant professor and devoted herself to the university. She retired in 1986 as the chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences in 1986. Nearly thirty-five years after her retirement, Dr. Lane still stays active on campus and is an avid supporter of student activities and scholarships. This scholarship in her honor is available to students majoring in Human Development and Family Science, Interior Design, or Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design.

Susie Frances Whitener Educational Scholarship

In 2012, Thomas and Jane Hamilton established a scholarship in memorial of Jane’s mother, Susie Francis Whitener. Whitener was a North Carolina native who had a passion for education and went on to obtain degrees from both Appalachian State Teachers College and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. During her career, Whitener held positions at Rutherfordton-Spindale High School in North Carolina, Mississippi State College for Women, Appalachian State Teachers College, Florida State University, and Georgia Southern College. Upon retirement, she was honored with the title of assistant professor emerita of Child Development at Georgia Southern College. This scholarship is available to students pursuing a degree in Human Development and Family Sciences.

Home Builders Association of Statesboro Scholarship – Interior Design

The Home Builders Association of Statesboro was created in 1968 as an amalgamation of builders, suppliers, and enthusiasts. The goal of the organization is to provide first-rate housing to Bulloch County and to provide scholarships to future architects and interior designers. The Home Builders Association of Statesboro has contribution to Georgia Southern University in the form of scholarships since 1979. This scholarship is available to students majoring in Interior Design.

Recreation and Tourism Management Scholarships

Honey Bowen Scholarship

Started in 2000, the Honey Bowen Scholarship was established in honor of Genaria Honey Bowen, a Statesboro civic activist. During her time, Bowen organized the first Parks and Recreation Department in Bulloch County in 1948 and served as the director. Bowen received countless awards for the effort she put into her community, including being inducted into the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association Hall of Fame. Bowen continued to serve her community until her passing in 1997 at the age of 91. This scholarship is available to students majoring in Recreation and Tourism Management.

Wayne and Syble Gay Scholarship

Established in 2013, this scholarship was created by Wayne and Sybil gay to financially support Georgia Southern students. Wayne Gay graduated from Georgia Southern in 1968 with B.S. in Recreation and an M.S. in Recreation Administration in 1973. Sybil Gay received three separate degrees from Georgia Southern in 1967, 1972, and 1985, all in Upper Elementary Education. This scholarship is available to rising juniors and seniors who have maintained a GPA of 3.25 or higher. This scholarship is available to students majoring in Recreation and Tourism Management.

Internship Scholarship Program

The Internship Scholarship Program (ISP), offered by the Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD), provides scholarships for career-related internships. Beginning in Summer 2019, the OCPD has provided unrestricted awards of up to $3,000 to offset the cost of professional internships that provide minimal or no compensation. Starting in Fall 2022, these internship scholarships will be available to students every academic semester.

Eligibility

• Must be an undergraduate student in good standing and completed at least 30 credit hours, or a graduate student in good standing.
• Plan to complete and have secured an internship that is at least six weeks in length and a minimum of 240 hours.
• The internship meets NACE internship guidelines.
• Must not have received an ISP award previously.

Recreation Student Association (RSA)

The Recreation Student Association provides a forum to discuss critical issues in the field of parks, recreation, and tourism management. We promote opportunities for career development and community service through partnerships with relevant professional associations, community organizations, and private businesses. Fashion Menagerie

The Fashion Menagerie builds an environment of creativity among Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design students. It provides an outlet to channel inspiration, increase awareness of fashion related events, promote and showcase local designers’ talents. Students may publish creative works while executing, producing, contributing, and educating themselves and their community about the ever-changing and dynamic world of fashion.

Interior Design Association

The Interior Design Association at Georgia Southern is a recognized student organization of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA).

Membership: Open to students with an interest in Interior Design.
Meetings: Monthly in IAB 2028

IDA functions to promote the Interior Design major at Georgia Southern University, to provide professional development and networking opportunities for current interior design students and alumni, and to offer opportunities for continuing education for the program’s alumni.
