Spring 2018 Bylaws and Policies Workgroup
Membership was comprised of two faculty from each department. There was one faculty member from each campus when a department existed on both the Armstrong and Statesboro campuses.

The workgroup met on Friday afternoons from Friday, February 16, 2018 to March 30, 2018 to produce of first draft of CBSS Bylaws.
The Chairs of the workgroup held listening sessions on both campuses.
- Session I: Tuesday, April 10. 2:00-3:00 p.m. Armstrong Center room 220 and Russell Union 2041. Working Group Co-chair Karen McCurdy was present at the Armstrong Center, while Co-chair Trent Maurer, and Dean John Kraft video-conferenced in from the Statesboro campus.
- Session II: Wednesday, April 11. 1:00-2:00 p.m., in the same locations, Armstrong Center 220 and Russell Union 2041. Both Working Group Co-chairs and the Dean were present on the Statesboro campus.
- Session III: Friday, April 20. 10:00-11:00 a.m. in Solms Hall. The Armstrong contingent of the workgroup hosted the listening session.
After considering the feedback from the listening sessions and the comments from the Department and School Chairs, the Dean returned the draft to the workgroup on April 20, 2018 with comments about separating policies from bylaws, addressing issues of authority over policies, and clarifying the roles of shared governance.
On April 23, 2018, the workgroup produced drafts of two documents – the CBSS Bylaws and CBSS Policies that attempted to address the structural and content issues of the first document.
With the end of the semester looming, the dean decided to regroup in the fall 2018 semester to continue to refine the bylaws and policies.
Fall 2018 Bylaws and Policies Workgroup
Fall 2018 Membership was comprised of two faculty from each department. There was one faculty member from each campus when a department existed on both the Armstrong and Statesboro campuses.
Co-chair Dr. Trent Maurer (SHE), Co-chair Dr. Ted Brimeyer (SOCI/ANTH), Dr. Joshua Kennedy (POINTS), Dr. Lara Wessel (POINTS), Dr. Wendy Wolfe (PSYC), Dr. Jessica Stagner (PSYC), Dr. Chad Posick (CRJU), Dr. Kevin Jennings (CRJU), Dr. Ned Rinalducci (SOCI/ANTH), Dr. Brent Wolfe (SHE), Dr. Candice Bodkin (PNS), and Dr. Patsy Kraeger (PNS).
In addition, Associate Deans Dr. Dan Skidmore-Hess and Dr. Brenda Blackwell were added as non-voting ex-officio workgroup members to facilitate dialog about administrative needs as the workgroup deliberates and revises the draft bylaws and policies documents.
The workgroup’s first meeting was on September 7, 2018. The workgroup has a deadline of 8 weeks, November 2, 2018, to produce administratively approvable drafts that will also receive at least two-thirds of faculty votes.
January 2019 and Bylaws Approval
The work of the Fall 2018 Governance Workgroup produced a new draft of the CBSS Bylaws. This draft was vetted by college and senior administration during the end of the Fall semester and approved to be presented to the CBSS faculty for a vote.
The draft Bylaws were distributed to faculty on January 14, 2019 via email. A discussion of the draft Bylaws was held at a college wide faculty and staff meeting on January 25 (IAB 1020, 2:30 pm). After discussion a motion was made and seconded for the faculty to vote on the Bylaws.
The ballots were emailed to the faculty with instructions to vote either approve or to not approve the draft Bylaws. At the end of one week, 82 faculty voted to approve, 2 voted to not approve, and 22 did not respond. The numbers of votes to exceeded the 2/3 out of 106 eligible faculty criterion.
The Bylaws went into effect immediately on February 1, 2019.
